Material Exploration with Coconut fibre

Explorations with Coconut Fibre (Coir) to meet following Technical Specifications:

  • Varying Opacity to allow varying grades of light to pass

  • Flexible in sheet format to make curved surfaces

  • Resilient for cleaning

  • Able to take heat to a certain extent with no warping

  • Moldable to varied forms (spherical)

  • Lightweight to be suspended

  • Insulator of Electricity (socket attachments)

Roles: Setting brief for explorations and experimenting

Small pieces of coir were rolled and embroidered into cloth, a very time consuming process but result creates an interesting shadow when light passes through it

I experimented with a circle patch. Both sides gave interesting results

A Wall Sconce created with mount board and coir rope - the rope was used not only for the aesthetics and to hold the form, but also to allow easy installation without using plastic socket holders.
